The extradition of Teves from Timor-Leste to the Philippines.
Arnolfo Teves, Filipino businessman and politician, attempted to seek political asylum in Timor Leste, however on December 2 of 2024 the Timor Leste courts granted the Philippines the request of his extradition.
In March of 2023 Roel Degamos was murdered, and despite accusations Teves denied all involvement. The House of Representatives, of which Teves represented Negros Oriental Third district, voted to suspend him due to his failure to return to the Philippines in spite of these accusations, then ultimately expelled him from membership.
It was suspected that he had fled to Southeast Asia, and it was eventually confirmed that he was in Timor Leste. On the 10th of May 2024 the Department of Justice was notified that there was a blue notice issued against Teves, and promptly after was arrested by the Timorse local police. On July 26th he was declared a terrorist due to his alleged links to murders and harassment, namely Degamos’ murder. On June 27 2024 the extradition of Teves to the Philippines was approved by Timor Leste governance.
This ruling was contested on procedural grounds and prompted the Timor Leste court to order parties to present evidence again. Timor Leste granted the request of the Philippine government to extradite Teve back to the country on December 2nd 2024. Teves told the Timorese courts that he feared for his life upon returning to the Philippines,
but the court said there was not enough evidence to support his claims, and ultimately granted the Philippines extradition request regardless. Teves is facing 10 counts of murder, 12 courts of frustrated murder, and 4 counts of attempted murder, however he denied all allegations. Upon returning to the Philippines Teves will face these allegations in Manila courts.
